At SoSensational Towers we spend a lot of time thinking about body issues as they relate to fashion for the mature woman.
And a comment in reply to one of our blog-posts set us thinking about long-term and age-related body issues as they impact on fashion and getting dressed.
The comment that set us thinking came from Gail, who told us she is 6-feet tall. She wrote: “I think that by the time we are women over 50 we should really know what works and what doesn’t…”
Yes, Gail, you are right. Up to a point. Clearly you have been 6-foot tall since your late teens or earlier, and have had a lot of time to learn how to deal with issues relating to your height. You really know, as you said, “what works and what doesn’t”. Similarly, a petite woman or perhaps a full-busted woman who has been full-busted since her teens, will also have learned over the years “what works and what doesn’t.”
The women who we think are less confident about how to dress now, and less certain “what works,” are those whose body issues arrived after age 50. We mean age-related body issues, such as a waistline and/or hips that have thickened inexplicably; a bust that has gone from B-cup to F-cup, or arms that were once firm that have become flabby and look crepey from sun-damage (or is that just Jan?).
These age-related body issues are a shock! Unlike her tall or petite or fuller-busted-since-her-teens friends, the mature woman has not had 35 years to learn to deal with these body issues.
And maybe these new and age-related body issues have arrived in addition to those other long-term issues she has been dealing with since her teens such as being tall or petite or pear-shape.
While we know that a few pounds distributed where we don’t want them is a common problem for women over 50, we also know that a few pounds lost where we don’t want them can also be a problem. While the curvier ladies may yearn for a defined jaw-line, the natural ‘skinnies’ (the ectomorphs) may yearn for a little more flesh at the neckline, feeling that deep ‘salt-cellars’ (those cavities where sternum and breastbone meet) are ageing, and they want to cover them up.
So, as mature women, we have issues to deal with when buying fashion; which is why we have produced some guidelines to help:
