Donatella Versace celebrated (or maybe not) her 61st birthday last Monday, May 2nd.
The Sicilian-born fashion designer and vice-president of the Versace Group, was the younger sister of designer and Versace founder, Gianni Versace, who was killed in Miami in July 1997.
The youngest of four Versace siblings (one of whom died as a child) Donatella studied knitwear design in Florence before joining her brother’s fashion business where she created her own diffusion line, Versus.
After Gianni’s death, she took over the chief designing role, ensuring the Versace brand stayed at the top of the international fashion rankings. With her permanent tan, her trademark long blonde hair and her provocative outfits, she epitomised the flamboyant Versace style. She has two adult children, Daniel and Allegra. Allegra, has followed her mother into the family business. A year past the Big-Six-O, Donatella’s look has mellowed a little but she still has a fashion empire to run so don’t expect to see her in a comfy fleece and a silver perm any time soon. But we love that about her, even if a few of her looks are a little hard to wear for anyone not a size zero and head of a fashion empire.
Steal her style (or, perhaps, borrow some ideas rather than taking her whole look on board – for instance, we are not suggesting the “lip enhancement”):
In the all black outfit she perfectly demonstrates how a 60-year-old can work a short skirt, if her legs are good – which Donatella’s are. We imagine that a personal trainer helps! To steal her style, pair the short skirt with a very long jacket and high boots, keeping everything black but adding a pop of colour via a bright bag.
We love how she wears a fabulous white shirt pairing it with plain black trousers/leggings and adding a glitzy belt at the waist. She has employed two clever stylists’ tricks to make herself appear taller (and thinner) in this outfit: she has tucked her trousers into boots, which makes legs look longer and thinner. And that shirt has three-quarter sleeves (you can replicate the effect by rolling back the sleeves of a long-sleeve shirt) which also makes legs look longer (yes, really! Try it and see).
Another thing to note about DV after 60 is her more flattering hair-style. The blonde rock-chick hair remains, but it now has some movement in it and a bit of a fringe swept over to the side, which we think is a good lesson in managing hair after 50 or 60 – you don’t have to cut it, but maybe consider rethinking how it frames your face and whether it needs more softness.
As for her make-up, we admire how she continues to rock that smoky eye, but we think Donatella could benefit from a bit of blusher – as can we all! The Morticia pallor, combined with the smoky eye is a bit ageing – we think a bit of warmth delivered via a lightweight BB Crème, plus a hint of bronzer and blusher would lend a dewy glow which we think is rather youthful.
What do you think of Donatella’s style?
