It’s no secret that the UK has developed quite a fondness for gin.
Steve Smith, the Michelin-starred head chef at top Jersey restaurant, Bohemia, says it’s time we realized gin is as useful and delicious in cooking, as when sipped in a G&T.
Smith, who has held a Michelin-star for more than 15 years, urges us to bring this summery spirit to the saucepan. If you’re apprehensive about swapping sips for bites, Smith suggests these brilliant ways to execute gin-centric dishes at home, all inspired by Bohemia’s new summer menu.
Gin + Fresh Water Fish
“The flavour of gin marries perfectly with fresh water fish, in particular salmon. When preparing, ensure the gin marinates into the fish by chilling in the fridge for at least 45 minutes before cooking. “We serve our gin and salmon dish with cucumber and horseradish, which complements the fish perfectly.”
Gin + Vegetables
Asparagus can serve as a tasty garnish for a G+T instead of lemon or lime. But you can also turn this into a delectable summer salad or side dish as gin-infused asparagus. Add ginger syrup and lemon juice for an extra zing.
Gin + Oysters
Gin and oysters are the ultimate extravagant flavour combination, guaranteed to impress even the most refined of diners. Simply pour gin and tonic over oysters, then season with lemon zest and a pinch of salt.
Gin + Desserts
The options are endless when it comes to pleasing the sweet-toothed. One of our favourites is a refreshing gin-and-tonic sorbet for summer. And almost any dessert (any dessert intended for adults, that is) can be topped with gin-and-tonic syrup made by combining caster sugar, tonic water and lemon juice in a saucepan over a low heat. Simmer gently till it thickens and the sugar is dissolved, then add a splash of gin and perhaps a few juniper berries.
Gin + Matcha
Fear not health enthusiasts –superfoods are not neglected. Try this simple gin and matcha cocktail, made with a tablespoon of Sweet Matcha Powder, lime juice, London Dry Gin and ice.
