Madonna, Madge, Ms Madonna-Louise Ciccone, the ex-Mrs Guy Ritchie, Kaballah-girl. However you think of her, she has been having a bad time of it in the British courts in a custody battle over her son, Rocco.
Normally, SoSensational would not consider the singer/songwriter/actress/producer a fashion role model. After all, Madonna, now 57, did pioneer the wearing of underwear as outerwear, tart-tat, glitter and many more better-forgotten apparel trends.
But SoSensational found the outfit she rocked for the London court, noteworthy. We wonder if, with that wonderfully androgynous suit-and-tie combo she was trying to subliminally convey to the judge the idea that she could be both mother and father to Rocco?
Joking apart, (and, yes, we realise custody battles are not funny at all, and we are only being mildly humorous here because Rocco is 16 and himself requesting the change in domicile) androgyny is an important trend – a game-changer in some ways.
Androgyny is a great way to look sassy and grown up, to cover up yet look fashion-forward. Did we expect Madonna to turn up to court in pastel cashmere or a demure little skirt suit? No, we did not. And that black trouser suit with the white shirt and tie is a real statement. It says: I may be 57 and an ex-wife, but I’m still standing. Which, of course, she most definitely is.
Steal her style by choosing a tailored trouser suit. Madonna has teamed hers with an oversized white shirt and a tie. She can pull off the super-androgynous styling because of her long, blonde wavy hair. If her hair was less feminine, she would have to balance out the masculinity of that suit-plus-shirt-plus-tie with a different top or blouse or risk looking like a cross-dresser.
We love her oversized specs, too, though we suspect that they get swapped for contact lenses for After Six wear. If you don’t need new glasses (or you don’t need glasses at all) copy her style with over-sized sunnies
We don’t love those fingerless gloves and think they are a daft trend best left to small children and Hipsters who need instant access to their keyboards in inhospitable climes!
Madonna is clever with her make-up these days. Copy her style by keeping cheek colour to a minimum; keeping eye make-up low-key and rocking some bright lippy to lend a pop of colour to your look.
If a black trouser suit feels too wintry for the upcoming season, this version in a warm light tan cotton-blend, feels more transitional while still looking totally on trend:
What do you think of Madonna’s controversial style? Who would you like to see next week?
