We consider maxis with sleeves to be the perfect summer dress.
Here’s why…
When it’s hot, you can throw one on adding nothing but flat sandals. And you don’t need to worry if you forgot to have your legs waxed.
On holiday, it’s perfect for dinner under the stars without you having to worry that your arms are on show. And, with flat sandals and a basket, a maxi with sleeves is ideal for a shopping trip or shore excursion.
If the day is cool, you can throw a biker or denim jacket on top and look achingly cool, yet perfectly grown up.
For a formal event, you can add an on-trend tailored blazer, which you can later remove without fear of revealing your arms.
Perhaps you’ve noticed that sleeves are having a moment.
We think that’s due to us. That’s not ‘us’ at SoSensational, though we’d like to think it is. It’s ‘us’ women over 50, over 60, 70, and even more…
Sassy, clever Carol Midgley offered a sort of explanation in a recent edition of The Times. She wrote: “…middle-aged people don’t dress like middle-aged people did in the 1970s…” She was writing about M&S but her point was that ‘we’ (women over 50, 60, etc) demand fashion not frumpy clothes.
We would add, we demand fashion on our terms. That often means sleeves. So this season there are lots of dresses with sleeves. And that includes Maxi Dresses.
Just to be clear. This is not about long evening dresses with sleeves though you can find those here and in Plus here.
We are talking maxi dresses that can be worn for daytime or for drinks and dinner when accessorised differently.
Some ‘sleeves’ on the dresses below are the regular kind. But some are formed by a Bardot neckline and a deep frill which has the effect of a sleeve in covering the tops of your arms, while not looking like sleeves per se. And looking more summery, too.
Yes, a maxi dress with sleeves is perfect.
