There’s no doubt about it: pastels for autumn are totally counter-intuitive. We all know it’s massively impractical to wear pale colours when the wind blows, the skies are grey and the rain is lashing down (potentially leaving mud splashes around the hem of your impossibly pale coat).

But, hey, when was fashion ever about practicality! Which means that one of the strongest trends (and one I am prepared to bet will come through even more strongly for A/W 2014/15) is pastels.
Guillaume Henry, the talented young designer at Carven, is the person most responsible for putting pastels on the fashion agenda for the autumn/winter season, sending oversized wool jackets and a divine wrap coat in sugar pink down the runway. Phoebe Philo at Celine sent a pale rose coat and a couple of skirts down her AW13 runway, while Jil Sander, queen of neutral and minimalism, also departed from her signature shade to indulge in uncharacteristically whimsical flashes of lemon, proving pastels can be worn by grown up women.
So take a look at the irresistibly pretty but definitely grown up pieces we have found you, in palest pinks, subtly light blues and luscious lemons, from High Street brands including Boden, Reiss, French Connection, Marks & Spencer, and designer brands, including Carven (the pink jacket, above, and the blue brushed angora dress, below far right, from fleur b).
We would be lying if we said they were the most sensible purchase you could make, but just think how a mouth-watering pastels will flatter your skin-tone, and lift your spirits on a dismal day. The enchanting pink coat from Ted Baker, which has a real Downton Abbey 1920s look, would make a wonderful cover-up for a winter wedding or a party, while the charmingly retro, oversized blue coat Sinequanone at Sylvie Quentin, nods to the pastel trend while being a little more wearable in urban life.
The pastel knits – and we have them in all colours, in simple cable and in super-warm cashmere – are a clever way to ease into the trend without sacrificing your neutral outer layer. Toughen up your pastel pieces with chunky ankle boots, a biker jacket or a mannish overcoat.
