It is time to stop saying 50 is the new 40.
It is time to be totally honest and say 50 is pretty much the new 30. Because being in our 50s is no bar to style; in fact our 50s is just base-camp as we head to the peak of style.
Style Icons
Style icons such as Kylie Minogue, hitting 50 in May, as well as Michelle Obama, designer Isabel Marant and the ageless Julianne Moore, are all past their 50th birthday and looking amazing into their 50s. It is time for the world to recognise that women over 50 can stay looking sensational in their 50s.
And we think the way to do it is by deploying confident style, wearing unique pieces and making fashion work for who you are now!
Luxury allowed
It is time to invest…in you. Being in your 50s lets you embrace the finer things in life and be confident with your personal style. Your style has, like you, evolved and a few one-off, investment pieces are essential to the easy sense of style you have developed.
We know that as stylish 50-somethings, you will love this merino knit (below, left) from L.K.Bennett and this easy-to-wear jacket (below, right) by Helene for Denim Wardrobe by Trilogy. We love the shape, the raw edge detail and longer line but especially love that it can be styled up or down, according to wardrobe needs.
In luxe accessories, this architecturally-clean tote from Marc Jacobs will ensure you stand out for all the right reasons.
Work Prints & Colour
Prints really help you to step up your fashion game. Print can sometimes feel daring but if kept to muted tones, it acquires an air of grown-up glamour. Try this gorgeous monochrome, mixed-print midi dress from L.K.Bennett (below, left) or this stunning floral print dress from the M&S Curve range. Either dress will take you to the office or to Sunday brunch. Or with heels added, will take you to something more special.
Some colour is vital, too, but equally important is how you wear that colour. If you love colour, there is plenty of it around. Perhaps rock one bright colour very visibly with a dash of bold colour added to a monochrome outfit.
As a way of introducing a hit of colour, we love this slouchy and stunning kimono-style jacket from Jigsaw (below) which will work perfectly with classic cigarette pants and black pumps. A jacket or coat in any paint-box bright could be a stand-out piece for a special occasion or could also be teamed with jeans and T-shirt plus flat boots for a casual brunch. If you prefer pastels, there are plenty of those around, too. Choose brights or pastels according to which do the most for your colouring.
Be Bold
While we like the classics, our 50s is the time to make bold choices that add high-voltage glamour to classic cuts. That is a super-effective way to stay on trend whilst maintaining that air of chic that is so essential to looking stunning now! And, of course, fashion should be fun and unique to you so a few statement pieces allow you to be bold, to be chic and to reveal a little of your personality.
We love this hi-lo top in a sharp mint hue from Ted Baker. The asymmetry and the beautiful pleating provide drama and elevate this top into a statement piece. These oversized spotted trousers from Jigsaw, are uber flattering and could well be one of the statement pieces of the season. Finally, we said be bold yet chic and nothing says bold yet chic as well as a long gown in head-to-toe colour, so we love this amazing, head-turning red dress (below, right) from Coast.
Defy your age
Accessories, and the details you add to your outfit, are an important way to defy your age as well as to add originality and chic to your wardrobe, and to be on trend without compromising your own personal style.
And when it comes to some details, thanks to current trends, it’s not necessary to compromise on your comfort, either. Mules are seriously on trend this season and this navy pair from Jigsaw represents the height of comfort whilst displaying your style credentials.
Also with an eye to trends and comfort, backpacks just keep getting chicer and chicer. Having left the realm of student attire, backpacks have become a fashion stalwart that saves our shoulders. We think this one (below, right) from Jigsaw, which has top-handles for versatility, is the perfect addition to any grown-up accessory collection and perfect for office or weekends. A great statement necklace is also a super chic way to add style to your wardrobe, so every tee you own will thank you for this hammered-gold delight from Boden.
Do you feel confident with the way you dress now in your 50s? If you do, please tell us why… If you don’t, please tell us what would improve your confidence… We’d love to hear from you!

Very nice, lovely styles.
Glad you approve Jackie! Many thanks for letting us know. We do appreciate it!
I would have related more to this piece if you had used models that were over 50 and of an average size. Would you consider using at least size 8,10,12 models in the future?
Hello Susan, Thank you so much for your comment. It is appropriate and one we receive from time to time. As we have commented elsewhere on blog posts, the trouble is that most brands do not photograph their clothes on older models, even where the clothes are mostly bought by older women! Importantly, we edit the fashion so that while the dress may have been photographed on a 20-year-old (if the model is 30ish, it’s a result!), the dress or whatever is very much appropriate for a 50-year-old or older woman. That’s what we do; we edit so that you don’t have to wade through thousands of dresses to find a few that might look good on a 50-year-old. Forget the models; that’s just brands being ‘aspirational’. And if you’re looking for women over 50 looking fabulous, take a look at all the Style Steals where we tell you how and why they look good and giving you access to their stylists’ tricks. Hope you enjoy looking around! Cyndy and Jan
Sorry ladies, but I think I’m in the hard to please camp as I didn’t like any of the styles shown. For me they are too bold and quite frumpy. The Hi-lo top is just weird and I don’t think any woman is going to make that item look good. I’m looking for flattering, classic and timeless and to give Milania a run for her money…. Not ranting, just my opinion. I just don’t see it.
Hi Julie and thanks for commenting. You are totally allowed not to like stuff; as the old French saying goes, chacun a son gout… We hope you find other things to love at SoSensational… There’s certainly lots to wear to give Melania a run for her money in the Partywear pages, here https://www.sosensational.co.uk/shop/party-evening-wear/
Swagger backs should only be in full length coats and dresses
You are obviously a woman who thoroughly understands fashion and silhouettes, Marie. Thanks for commenting.
