Is it just me, or have red carpet events become rather ‘vanilla’ these days? I can’t help missing Cher wearing those gaspworthy Bob Mackie creations and Bjork in her ‘swan’ dress, not to mention Helena Bonham-Carter in some of her wilder moments.
But all our gleeful ‘what-was-she-thinking’ mockery finally resulted in celebs using professional stylists, so the only fun nowadays lies in the occasional mistake or in spotting who’s had bad plastic surgery. But would those glamorous A-listers really risk having surgery shortly before a huge event like the Oscars?
Apparently not. Even the gossipiest of MUAs agree that a working actress who’s already mid-shoot on another movie can’t afford to suddenly appear thinner, younger, tighter or blonder half-way through it, so most red carpet transformations are purely temporary. That’s what makes their makeover tips and tricks the ones we most want to know about. Here’s the inside scoop on this year’s winners.
5 days beforehand – skin refining plan
LA-based skincare guru Ole Henriksen, whose clients have included Charlize Theron, Amy Adams, Hugh Jackman, Rene Zellweger and Katy Perry, recommends getting skin into flawless condition a few days early to give it time to settle. He recommends first massaging a thin layer of sesame oil into the skin, followed by his Walnut Complexion Scrub, £29 to deep clean, detox and refine. After rinsing it off, his Lemon Strip Flash Peel, £35 uses concentrated AHAs to provide a three-minute, line-minimising, colour-smoothing, resurfacing treatment, and this should be followed by his Pure Truth Youth Activating Oil with organic rose hip seed oil, antioxidant vitamins and omegas 3,6,9, £69.99 and his anti-puffiness, anti-sagging Ultimate Lift Eye Gel, £36.
3 days beforehand – skin rejuvenation from inside
Celebrity dermatologist and nutritionist Dr Perricone is a skincare visionary whose fans are said to include A-lister beauties such as Uma Thurman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez and Cate Blanchett. Believing firmly in beauty from the inside out, he calls his Three Day Nutritional Face Lift ‘the facelift in your fridge’ because of its ability to add glowing radiance, reduce puffiness, improve facial contours and even firm a softening jawline. It’s basically a fast-acting eating plan that is packed with salmon (recommended twice a day, in fact) and antioxidant-rich vegetables and berries to rapidly rejuvenate the complexion. Check it out here.
2-3 hours beforehand – hair and make-up must-haves
This is when the dress and accessories, mostly donated or loaned by designers in exchange for free publicity, arrives at the celebrity’s home or hotel, along with the hairdresser and MUA, the costs of whom may be covered by the film budget or by a sponsorship deal with a specific brand.
At the BAFTAs, for example, Charles Worthington’s Savoy-based glam squad included Ken O’Rourke who created the pretty braided hairstyle of nominee Rooney Mara (although his official celebrity client list also includes Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, and Kristin Stewart). One of his secret weapons was Charles Worthington’s BAFTA Edition Volume & Bounce Express Blow Dry Primer, which builds fabulous body and shine while another was the matching Perfect Finish Hairspray which adds staying power and frizz control, £6.99 each.
The make-up artists also included a team from Lancome, as well as top freelancers such as Karen Alder, who used Lancome make-up on nominee Saiorse Ronan, including lots of Hypnose Doll Eyes Mascara, £23.50, plus Artliner in Noir, £21, to create those wide-eyed feline flicks; while A-list favourite Lisa Eldridge worked on Kate Winslet using the brand’s Teint Idole Ultra 24H Foundation in 02, £30, Hypnose Star Eyes Palette in Brun Adore, £38, and Rouge in Love Lipstick in 181N, a golden red, £22. You’ll find Lancome’s Bafta make-up edit here.
