We think the whole of Britain is in agreement with one thing – that Dame Helen Mirren, 69, is a sexy style icon, and here at the SoSensational offices we are well and truly on Team Mirren.
With this in mind we thought we would take a glance back at her style history, from early films to modern-day style icon.
Ms Mirren started her career in the late 60s romance Age of Consent, allowing her natural beauty to shine through and showing off that amazing bikini body that has been the talk of the tabloids ever since. She looked spectacular throughout and we love the dishevelled beach look – the original Boho babe.
In her next decade the actress certainly didn’t shy away from the controversial film roles or the nudity – the 70s saw her star in Hussy and on stage, the controversial Caligula. We have to say we preferred the styling in Hussy and we loved the 70s hair.
The early 90s saw Dame Helen take on her most famous role, on UK TV’s Prime Suspect playing Detective Jane Tennison. That role saw the birth of her famous blond bob that had various incarnations. Her hard-faced character was a world away from her earlier work – ever the chameleon!
2003 saw a return to nudity and a little fun with the British film Calendar Girls, showcasing what amazing older women can do when they work together. The film was a huge hit as was Helen’s look at the Golden Globes that year when she injected a little bit of her character into her Red-Carpet style: we love the sunkissed make up, the curls and a dress that showcased her assets to perfection – the over 50s sex symbol had arrived in full force.
The past decade, since 2006 has seen Helen Mirren win an Oscar, an Emmy and a pair of Golden Globes plus a plethora of other awards. It has seen her Red-Carpet style go from success to success, perfectly demonstrating that you don’t have to be 18 to look amazing!
We loved her vampy, long-sleeved black Badgley Mischka gown with gold embellishments worn to the 2013 Golden Globes. Then she made us all gasp again in 2014, triumphing in a stunning green gown by top British designer, Jenny Peckham – the freshness of the look, the colour, the styling; it was perfection.
But one of our all-time favourite looks has to be the red bikini that got the entire British press talking, and proved beyond a doubt that a bikini can work at any age. And for that we love Dame Helen Mirren just a little bit more.
What do you think about Helen Mirren?

I think she mostly looks best in evening gowns – she chooses well and seems in her element with understated glamour, wisely not showing too much of everything. But she looks good in a well-fitting bikini too. I think quality fabrics, relatively simple styles and a good fit are the lessons that can be learned from her.
You are so right Marion, especially about how a well-fitted bikini can make all the difference – and yes, good lessons from the lovely Helen!
