Last week, we were talking about fitness clothing and activewear. Relax, Luxe (or luxury) Trainers have absolutely nothing to do with fitness or the gym.
Luxe Trainers are one element in S/S16’s trend for flats. We remain infatuated with flats; as well as Luxe Trainers, there are espadrilles, brogues, flatforms; even the trusty ballerina is around for those who want a dash of elegance to accompany their comfort…
The trend for Luxe Trainers was originally kicked off by Paris-based designer Isabel Marant back in 2011. Her brightly coloured wedge-heel trainers were never intended for the gym; they were the funky and comfy alternative to those vertiginous heels by her fellow countryman, Christian Louboutin. In the UK, Ash was quick to produce its own equally covetable but infinitely more wearable take on the wedge-heel trainer – and at a more affordable price point. And we happily adopted wedge-heel trainers for work and off-duty wear.
Since then, major designers in Paris, London, New York and Milan, have produced their own line of luxe trainers mainly in metallics or in multi-coloured leather and the High Street has followed. So, wearing trainers outside of the gym and away from the running track, is now not just acceptable but positively essential if you wish to be perfectly on trend.
Luxe trainers work especially well with “volume” (another key trend for S/S16); they also endow midi and maxi length skirts with a slightly tough aesthetic which is very “now”. Trainers look very on-trend with pleated skirts and baggy, paper-bag trousers. Metallic trainers are a good investment as they are effectively neutral so match lots of outfits…
Oh yes, and just because they are called “luxe” doesn’t mean they have to cost a lot; it is the concept which determines whether they are luxe rather than the price!
Here are our sensational six…
Back in November, Linda emailed telling us she rarely wore dresses as she was unable to find “decent looking low heeled shoes” and asking us to suggest “nice shoes for women who wear orthotics”.
Linda, luxe trainers might be the way to go, but if not, please take a look at the new season’s ballerinas.
See our “How to Style it” for Luxe Trainers below…
We’d love to know which of the three looks above is your favourite! It’s easy to let us know what you think below…
