Allow us to introduce you to one of our favourite hybrids, Jeggings. A combination of jeans and leggings, they are the legwear for all of us older women who love the idea of jeans but the reality not so much…
Let’s face it ladies, past age 45, or sooner if the pounds have crept on, getting into a pair of authentic, tight denim jeans can be a bit of a pain – quite literally, if you suffer regularly from cystitis (tight jeans exacerbate the problem and while jeggings are sometimes tight, they are generally made from softer, stretchier fabric, so are much kinder to the more delicate areas of female anatomy).
There are, of course brilliant and looser fitting jeans (unkindly known, in North America, as Mom jeans) by clever brands such as NYDJ, and we love them, but jeggings really do the job, especially if you are going to cover the waistband and hips with a long top or jumper, thus concealing the very bit that distinguishes jeans from jeggings. They are also truly great value and two or even three or four pairs of jeggings in a variety of washes/colours probably cost no more than a single pair of branded jeans.
Some of our favourite jeggings are at M&S, which offers them in Sizes 8-24, in short, medium, long and petite fittings and in lots of washes, including indigo, black and classic denim blue.
Some jeggings masquerade as jeans; at Uniqlo for instance, their Ultra Stretch Jeans are jeggings in all but name, except for the fact that they fasten with a zip and button. M&S, also offer real jeans-lookalike jeggings. And we commend those to you, too, if you wear shorter tops and want zip, etc, to be on show.
Jeggings work especially well for layering. On top of basic jeggings, wear a top or knit that finishes at mid-hip or below your bottom, and then add a jacket or maybe a coatigan (another of the hybrids we love – a cross between a coat and a cardigan). And remember the hemline of top, knit or jacket should never finish at your widest part as this will add inches; it should finish several inches above your widest part or, better still, several inches below your widest part which provides optimum slenderising.
