Known as the ‘athletic shape’, ‘the banana’ or even ‘the ruler’, there are so many questionable names for the rectangle shape, and luckily if the below sounds like you, it’s easy to dress well for your shape!
- You have a smaller bust
- You don’t have a waist
- You have more narrow hips
Since no part of your body looks any bigger than the other, it’s oh-so easy to create more shape with your clothes.
Tops
The trick here is to make your bust and shoulders look wider, thus making your waist look smaller- simple! To do this, you can choose a piece with shoulder padding or choose a neckline such as a wide v-neck, boatneck, sweetheart or square neck to make your shoulders look wider. If you’re small busted, high necklines look good, and front pockets and pleats also add bulk. Ruching and gathering helps to create a waist, but avoid baggy tops.
Jackets
Stay away from pea coats and baggy pieces that only emphasis your rectangle shape, and choose a piece with a fitted waist or belt. Crop jackets are ideal if they stop at your waist, belted macs are transitional pieces perfect for every weather, and smart fitted blazers work for so many occasions!
Skirts
We would advise against a full skirt if you’re going to team this with a slinky top- dressing for a rectangle is all about keeping things equal. However, a-line skirts with high waists are the perfect choice for you, or choose a chic peplum or pencil skirt if you’re going for a smart look.
Trousers
Luckily for you, almost any type of trousers look gorgeous on you! We’d still recommend choosing a high-waisted pair to cinch in and create a waist, or if you prefer low-waisted, a fitted shirt would match perfectly. We think wide-fit trousers look so chic, and disguise your straight up and down legs.
Dresses
If you hadn’t guessed, it’s all about creating a waist when it comes to dresses. Block colours or waist detailing are perfect, and head for fit and flare, ruched dresses, wrap dresses or shift dresses. If you prefer looser dresses, team this with a belt and the extra material flowing above and below it will create the illusion of a waist too. Jumpsuits will look gorgeous, as will a halterneck style.
Accessories
Belts are a rectangle’s best friend, just make sure you choose one that fits your frame. Smaller, shorter ladies should opt for a skinny belt and ladies with a bigger build look fabulous with a wide belt. Cross body bags should be avoided as these draw the eye to your waist, but go wild with whatever jewellery you like! The best accessory of course is a smile and confidence in your gorgeous shape.
Swimwear
Swimwear is one of the most tricky parts when it comes to dressing a rectangle shape, but there are still some gorgeous pieces! Keep your top and bottom halves matching- don’t mix and match a printed top with a plane bottom, otherwise we’d recommend halterneck tops, low-waisted bottoms and costumes with figure-flattering side panels, waist panels or a belt.
