Top tips for successful business dressing:
Put together a capsule wardrobe of basics in a neutral colour – dress, skirt, trousers, jacket, and coat.
Choose the best neutral shade to send the right message – use navy, grey, black or brown. Check out colour and authority messages here.
Update each season with trend-led and season-specific tops and accessories.
Accessorised cleverly, with (for A/W) opaque or ribbed tights and loafers or ankle boots, a dress can look every inch as business like as a skirt and jacket or trousers and jacket.
Add colour with your tops and accessories but avoid a totally pale coloured outfit for work. It has no ‘authority’ message, so best save it for the weekend.
If you fancy owning a leather, or faux leather, skirt for off-duty wear, if you buy it in the right length and the right shape (we are not talking a mini-skirt or skater skirt here) it will look perfectly business like when worn with a tailored blazer.
Remember to buy your coat in a size or cut that will fit over your workwear jacket. This season’s favourite blanket coat and the perennially chic wrap coat both achieve this very well.
Your working clothes are an investment for your future success; spend the most on the items you will wear most often.
Colour co-ordinate suits and separates in plain or subtle patterns.
Complete your business image with good accessories – shoes, handbag, briefcase, watch, belt, purse and pen.
