Party-perfect skin- how to sparkle without shine
Everyone wants to shine on a big night out – but there’s a big difference between a skin that glows with translucence and inner health, and one that looks sweaty (or perhaps pebble-dashed with glitter) so go easy with anything that adds shimmer. The key to getting the right effect is not just what skincare products you use, but how you apply it.
Start with products that make skin look dewy and moist, not shimmery or shiny. Top make-up artist Ariane Poole says, “Avoid extremes. Matte skin looks dehydrated and aged, but going sparkly can be ageing, too. Choose make-up with a demi-matte finish and a subtle light-reflecting sheen.” She recommends Estée Lauder Perfectionist Youth-Infusing Makeup SPF25, £39 which is comfortably lightweight, comes in a big range of 22 shades and also helps skin appear less lined.
Lucy Brosé, Let’s Face It Personal Make-up Stylist, adds that heavy make-up can also sink into and exaggerate lines and wrinkles. She says, “It’s better to mix a CC cream into your foundation to lighten the texture. It still gives coverage but won’t sit in the creases, and it adds radiance, too.” Try Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream SPF50 Hydrating Colour Corrector in a choice of nine shades, £28
“Tinted moisturiser is another option, ideally one with reasonable coverage since some are so wishy-washy that an hour or so later you wonder where it’s gone,” says prestige make-up artist Abby Ireland. She likes the new Sisley Tinted Moisturiser with Botanical Extracts. £48.68 from Tesco.
Celebrity make-up artist Katrina Appie, who also works for the new London-based beauty app, Priv, suggests, “MAC Select Moisturecover Concealer, £16 is very lightweight and works with the skin, especially under the eyes. On older skins, you can apply it very sparingly all over the T-zone, then blend outwards. Top with Mineral Powder. The effect is so light, it looks just like your skin, but better! Also, MAC Fast Response Eye Cream, £22 is like a caffeine shot for the undereye area. It brightens and lifts.”
“Not everyone likes face powder,” adds Abby. “Some people dislike it because they use it all over instead of just over the T-zone where it works as a fixative.”
Finally, handle highlighter powder with care. “Even though it isn’t pigmented, once you apply too much it’s difficult to take off,” advises Ariane. “It’s better to use a little at a time, so don’t overload the brush, then brush it on in thin, manageable layers to small areas such as the cheekbones and browbones.” Try Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder in Highlight, £27
