Hands up who remembers co-ordinating separates.
If you are just turned 50, you may remember your mum wearing co-ordinating separates. If, like Jan and Cyndy, you are over 60, we think there’s little doubt you remembers wearing them yourself.
Co-ordinated separates was a huge trend in the 70s and early 80s.Then in the 90s and the noughties, co-ords began to be referred to pejoratively as “too matchy-matchy” (including by SoSensational, we have to confess). And co-ordination became the antithesis of style; it was all about clashing colours and clashing prints…
Well, we doubt you will be very surprised to learn that co-ordination is back! Actually, it never really went away – we just co-ordinated in a different and less contrived way. But now it is back, big-time, known as co-ords and led by high-fashion High Street innovator, River Island.
It was inevitable really: with The 1970s still hanging around as a huge macro-trend and trouser-suits resuming their place in the spotlight as the current must-have workwear and “occasion” option, it was only a matter of time before other co-ordinating pieces became essential, too.
As with every trend that returns, it is about how we style it this time around. If you are a 21-year-old Hoxton Hipster, you could put together an ironic tribute to co-ordination, probably with pieces picked up at your favourite vintage shop, finishing off the look with Margot Ledbetter eye-liner and a crimson lip.
However, if you remember co-ordinates from the last time around, as Jan and Cyndy do, co-ords need to be styled differently. Allow us to explain: you may recall that fashion rule about not wearing a trend if you can remember it from the last time around. Well, ladies of 50-plus and 60-plus, if we observed that rule, it would leave us with nothing to wear so SoSensational is reinterpreting that rule: if you remember a trend from the last time around, you have to wear it in a very different (and definitely non-ironic) way.
So, these are our picks of co-ordinates, styled for perfectly on-trend 50-plus and 60-plus fashionistas, not Hoxton hipsters. And don’t even think about adding Big Hair (step away from that can of Elnett right now).
Also, don’t forget that if you don’t fancy coordinating your outfit, you can always coordinate your accessories!
Do you like co-ords or do you think they are too ‘matchy-matchy’?
