Diane Keaton, the American film actress, director, producer and screenwriter, is again on cinema screens in the UK starring in ‘Hampstead‘ alongside Brendan Gleason and James Norton, whom we love from his role in Grantchester.
In this new film, set in and around Hampstead Heath in North London, Keaton, 71, plays an American widow, who lives in Hampstead and begins an unlikely relationship with Gleason’s character, who is living ‘wild’ on the Heath.
Keaton’s first major film role was in The Godfather in 1972. The films we know and love her best for were those directed by and co-starring Woody Allen, including Play It Again, Sam; Sleeper (1973) and, of course, Annie Hall for which she won an an Academy Award, for Best Actress.
To avoid becoming typecast as her Annie Hall persona, she took on dramatic roles in films such as Looking for Mr Goodbar and Reds (for which she received an Academy Award nomination). Her popular later films include Baby Boom; Father of the Bride; and The First Wives Club. She made the tabloid headlines lastyear after telling chat-show host Ellen DeGeneres that, at 70, she was “sexually frustrated.”
Sexual frustration aside – not our territory – we think Keaton looks sensational at 71. In particular we think she could be the subject of a master-class in hair, glasses, necklines and necklaces.
We deliberately left out hats: Keaton wears hats a lot and while she can carry off “cookie,” it is not always a good look for non-movie-icons of 70-plus. In the wrong situation (i.e. when the temperature is not below-zero and you are not at a wedding or a race-meeting or similar), it can easily suggest “bonkers old lady”!
We love that she appears not to have had “work,” the celebrity euphemism for face-lifts, etc. She looks like a great-looking 71-year-old with a few laugh-lines and imperfections, which means we can all learn from her and Steal her Style. The first step is a great, unstructured haircut with lots of movement. Also steal her hair-colour; she hasn’t obliterated the grey but has a few (sometimes a lot) of warm highlights, which look youthful and fashionable. The highlights also emphasise that choppy hair-cut.
If you can, change glasses often; a fashionable pair of specs is instantly more youthful.
Keaton wears high necklines and a lot of shirts which work well with her angular features. When she is wearing a shirt with an open neckline, she adds a choker. When she wears a blazer, she wears the collar up – a clever styling trick.
Like Diane Keaton, always wear lippy; hers is a warm but not too deep pinky-brown shade.

Diane Keaton does have a very distinctive style and how brilliant that yours is so similar. You didn’t send a picture, but we’re sure you look equally fabulous. That’s the trick, isn’t it; finding a style that works for you and running with it. You and DK are obviously in synch and both know what suits you…
Would love to find clothes like what Diane Keaton wears., here in the US. I cant seem to find the wide collar and cuff button down shirts. Any suggestions?
Hi Cathleen. Thanks for commenting. We also love Diane Keaton’s look. Our Celebrity Style Steal is from several years ago so we wouldn’t even know where to send you to find a shirt like hers in Britain. And we certainly don’t know where to send you in the USA… You might want to look at men’s shirts as they often have a wider collar and cuff buttons similar to the shirts worn by Ms Keaton. Sorry we can’t be more help.
