Ok, we recognise that only a few people will actually be heading for the Royal Regatta at Henley or for a performance of opera at Glyndebourne.
But even those of us not lucky enough to have tickets, may have similarly smart events to attend this summer.
Some events may have a formal dress code. At others, like Glyndebourne, it will just be tradition making us want to glam up. But, Henley or Glyndebourne, formal or informal, lunch party or Big-birthday dinner, we all want to look fabulous.
Henley’s dress code is very strict on hemlines, so we’re very lucky there are lots of stunning midis around this season. It states: “Ladies are required to wear dresses or skirts with a hemline below the knee” adding sternly that: “Ladies will not be admitted wearing divided skirts, culottes or trousers of any kind.” And although a hat is not a requirement, “it is customary for ladies to wear hats.”

At Glyndebourne, the Festival organisers acknowledge that dressing formally is based on tradition. On their website, they say: “The tradition of wearing evening dress…originated with founder John Christie, who felt that it was one of the ways the audience could show its respect for the performers.” It goes on to say that “Formal evening dress is customary for the summer Festival,” which means it is an occasion to break out a gorgeous frock, or perhaps a fabulous jumpsuit or stunning evening separates.
