At SoSensational, we totally believe that every grown up woman (that’s every woman who believes she is grown up, whether she is a woman of 30-something, or a woman of 50-something or a woman of 70-something) needs some basic essentials in her wardrobe.
Some of these basic essentials will be transitional – those pieces which are vital as summer shades into autumn, or as winter shades into spring; most will be neo-classic and in good quality so we don’t have to buy them more than once every few years; and with all of them, we need to add our personal stamp of style, whether it is via a well-worn leather belt or a scarf in a fabulously flattering colour.
These include some really well-cut classic blue jeans; a crisp white shirt (and crisp white shirts are having another “moment” for A/W15, so do pick up yours early); a beautifully cut and brilliantly versatile jacket which will work with the jeans and shirt as well as any number of dresses or skirt–blouse combos; plus some very sassy accessories, including a great pair of faux snakeskin loafers; a roomy and stylishly uncluttered black tote, a chunky watch and oversize sunnies.
And finally, there is a truly great classic trench coat. Of course, we know that while everyone has the potential to look great in a trench coat, not everyone suits a trench coat when it is worn buttoned up and belted. So, it is allowed to be worn undone or partially undone, unbelted or with a leather belt in place of the fabric one; with the sleeves turned or rolled up and with the collar turned up. Also, although the light neutral beige goes with a lot of outfits, it doesn’t enhance everyone’s complexion, so look for either a lighter or a more honeyed tone, or even navy or black – all of which are also on offer at M&S.
