Here at SoSensational, we are big fans of Sandi Toksvig. Our admiration for her goes well beyond liking her as a TV presenter.
The Danish-born Sandra Birgitte Toksvig OBE is a gifted comedian, writer, actor and radio and TV producer. She is also a political activist – the joint founder of the Women’s Equality Party (established in 2015)
Since October 2016, Sandi has been host of the BBC Two quiz show QI. She was formerly the host of Radio 4’s News Quiz and is host of Channel 4’s game show Fifteen to One .
She has also been announced as one of the presenters of The Great British Bake Off, in its new home at Channel 4, alongside comedian Noel Fielding and judges, the renowned British cook Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood.
The eighth series, will air on Channel 4, later this year. Channel 4 have not yet announced a date. All they are currently saying is “autumn”.
If you are wondering why this erudite, Cambridge-educated Dane is our Style Steal (apart, obvs, from all the accomplishments of this mother of 3) it’s because we think that at 59, she is looking better than ever. She has oodles of style we can all steal, especially other petites and other women-shaped women.
We don’t think she’d mind being held up as a role model for petites or for women-shaped women. In fact we think she’d probably find it amusing.
Let’s start by saying we love that great haircut. Short hair (well short-ish) hair suits her, as does that creamy shade of blonde.
We prefer her hair with texture, length and movement, as that, in our view, is more flattering for her and for all of us who do not have the bone structure and features to suit a super-short elfin cut…
Like many of us, Sandi wears specs… We love the pair she’s wearing here. They are quite curvy, which is a good shape for the curvily featured Ms Toksvig. And the light-colour frames work well with her complexion and hair colour, too.
They are fashionably oversized (which also suits her). She might have been tempted to choose oversized frames in, say, tortoiseshell or black. It’s good that she resisted, as either of those would be far too dark and severe. With her light-but-warm colouring, dark oversized frames would overwhelm her; and her glasses would be the first thing we’d see…
Talking of her light-but-warm colouring we love her very natural-looking make-up: eyes emphasised, face subtly contoured (we can copy with bronzer and blusher) and mouth given just a slick of lip-tone lippy.
We’ve talked about dressing for a petite frame before, and have featured other petites in our Celebrity Style Steal feature, notably Sheena Easton and Lulu.
Instead, we will highlight how Sandi, who also has a fuller bust, ‘owns’ that bomber jacket by choosing one in soft colours and a hazy print. Oh yes, and by wearing it unzipped. We think that if she wasn’t on the set of QI seated behind the desk, that bomber could be undone more. For an explanation why, see our video.
We’d also like to highlight the subtle difference in the 2 pictures below from which we think we can all take a lesson. In both of them Ms Toksvig is wearing a blazer/tailored jacket over a shirt. In one she is wearing the shirt undone and in the other she is wearing the shirt buttoned up to the neck. We also think, but cannot be sure, that the unbuttoned one is in a soft fabric, and the printed one, is in a firmer fabric.
We can all learn from those pictures that the ‘firmer’ shirt buttoned to the neck makes her neck appear shorter and makes her face look fuller, while the soft shirt unbuttoned is more flattering, making her neck appear longer and her face slimmer. So we’ll borrow that idea, Sandi, thanks…
