The popularity of Scandinavian stye – widely known as Scandi-Style – has been growing rapidly over the past decade or so.
It is now a firm fixture on the style lists, so we thought we would take you on a whistle-stop tour of Scandi-Style to allow you work the trend to perfection.
Scandi-Style is a mash-up of Scandinavian designers plus the style vibe of several Scandinavian countries – notably Sweden and Denmark, with the odd hint of Iceland.
The style is casually chic, graphically simple and design focused. It is rarely contrived, hard-to-wear or featuring bright colours; there’s more than a hint of Nordic noir. Think well-cut trousers, silk tees and cashmere mixes; or flirty midi skirts teamed with pointy flats; long, baggy knits – and all thrown together with a light hand and a cool, laid-back approach. Colours are invariably muted and the emphasis is on the cut and design of each piece.
How to pull off ‘Scandi-Style’
- Your wardrobe needs to be stocked with cool, neutral tones – colour should be used sparingly and any patterns should be subtle.
- Play with texture – floaty silk teamed with chunky knits;, cashmere tees with wide legged wool trousers.
- Keep the silhouette clean but adventurous – statement pieces are fine but need to be based around quality basics and very little colour (sorry, cyndy!).
- Modern and luxe is what it is all about –investment pieces that transcend seasons and easily mix-and-match across your wardrobe.
Key Pieces
Flats – a little edgy, perfectly casual and ideal for day to night
Knits – Scandinavian countries are pretty chilly so they know their knitwear; cold weather is something we know a thing or two about in the UK, too, so it is the perfect addition to your wardrobe.
Trousers – No Scandi-Style look would be complete without some serious trouser staples, investment is key here so go for quality.
Tees – luxe tees are big news in Scandi-style. They look amazing for both work and weekend-wear and can be styled up or down. You will need white, grey and black to mix with other tonal pieces.
Oversized Outerwear – laid back luxe is not complete without an oversized throw-on coat to make it appear as if you haven’t tried at all.
Denim and Leather – black leather trousers are a staple in the Scandi style wardrobe and work perfectly as a texture contrast. Denim also integrates easily into Scandi style, worn as jeans or as a soft shirt.
Feminine Skirts – with all this androgynous styling, a feminine statement skirt paired with a cashmere tee ensures you are ready for drinks or dinner without a second thought.
