Brace yourself ladies: British Vogue says that fashionable women should not be flashing cleavage—especially because doing so arouses so much rude comment on social media.
Well, for once, phew, what a relief to be “older” – to be over 50!
Because we don’t post our pictures on social media 150 times a day. And if we did, most of our friends are actual friends and would probably refrain from comment.
In a feature in its December issue, British Vogue states that, “Suddenly cleavage feels wrong,” and “all the cool girls are braless” It cites Alia Shawkat at the Emmy Awards, and adds “the amount of skin… on show is an indicator of how little power you really have.” That is an interesting claim but implies that women put their cleavage on display for political reasons rather than for reasons of fashion or practicality (i.e. you have a 34FF bust, how can you hide that?)
An alternative explanation is that after two decades of cleavage, it’s enough focus on breasts. It is time for a new silhouette.
And yet another explanation is that it is extremely tough to have a model-thin or actress-thin body and cleavage. Or perhaps that should be – it is extremely tough to have a model-thin or actress-thin body and cleavage naturally without the aid of surgery and/or push-up bras.
And, also, it is time for a new silhouette – or rather, it is time to revisit a silhouette. Remember the 70s and 80s when many of us went bra-less? And not in a political statement about women’s lib, but because fashion demanded a flatter, more androgynous silhouette, as it had in the 1920s – and as it does now.
If you like a décolletage and it suits you, carry on rocking it.
If, on the other hand, you have a straight body shape and small boobs, and you are fed up with underwiring, this is your moment to go au naturel or to wear a different bra and to be en vogue as well as approved by British Vogue.
