Kristen Scott-Thomas DBE, so officially Dame Kristin Scott Thomas, aged 55, got herself into un peu de l’eau chaud –a bit of hot water/controversy recently when she basically slagged off British women for dressing in a vulgar way compared to French women.
And this very talented British actress clearly believes she is an authority, having lived in France for more than 20 years. She was even awarded the Legion d’Honnuer, France’s highest civilian honour.
Unlike fellow Dames, Judi Dench and Julie Walters, the icily beautiful and uber-chic Scott-Thomas doesn’t seem to aspire to National Treasure status. But whatever we think about her views, we love her acting – in Four Weddings and a Funeral, for which she won a Best Supporting Actress BAFTA, and in The English Patient, for which she received an Oscar nomination.
More recently, she has shone in French film, notably I’ve Loved you So Long (Il y a longtemps que je t’aime) in 2008 and Before The Winter Chill (Avant L’Hiver) in 2013.
Her uber-chic and very French style, demonstrated in two contrasting ways here, appears hard to steal, but we’ll show you how:
Wear colours (yes, again, sorry) which work for you and which work together. Dame Kristen has gone for a dark navy-blue drapey cardigan, teamed with a blouse in a wonderfully subtle taupe shade. Note in particular the very loose fit of both the blouse and the cardigan. That, together with the low necklines transform what might otherwise be quite a prim look into something wonderfully grown up and deeply glamorous. A statement necklace adds to the glamour quotient.
In that tan biker and statement specs, Dame Kristen demonstrates that she can also rock a hip and high-fashion look. We suspect that like Madonna, Dame Kristen swaps those cool and highly visible specs for either contact lenses or less conspicuous frames for evenings and Red Carpet wear. Hiding under that biker jacket is the perfect (and perfectly fitting) white tee. The perfect white tee is a garment Parisian women own in quantity, chucking them away as soon as they develop a hint of grey and always stocking up on new sparkling white ones. She has added some barely-there hoop earrings to accompany the biker-and-specs combo.
Note the great maquillage in both pictures – just enough to emphasise her features, but not so much she could ever look vulgar! Play up eyes and brows with browns and greys, choose a subtle blusher for a hint of colour and finish with a slick of pale lipstick, not too glossy…

I’ve learnt more from your section on Steal Their Style than in countless books and it must be the way that you not only show the garments but analyse WHY they look good and how to style them. Then also, the how not to (Kirsty Brinkley’s outfit in camel skirt) can be a revelation that we don’t want to look averagely good we want to look STUNNING. Thank you so much. I love this site …. yet have to buy but I’m in between clearing out my wardrobe and finding a new style.
