This is what 50 looks like now.
And this is what 60 looks like now – we’re talking about Helen Mirren and lots of other gorgeous celebs who’ve blown out 60 candles (or more) on their birthday cake.
Get over it.
Honestly, to see how some people react when told a celebrity – a female celebrity, obvs – is 50 or even 60, you might wonder what deeply shocking habit had been revealed about her…
The perfect example – as we mentioned in a recent Style Steal – was watching how Graham Norton reacted when the gorgeous Salma Hayek said she had just celebrated her 50th birthday. To observe his shock, you might have thought this beautiful Mexican-born actress had announced a penchant for practising black magic.
The reaction of media and pundits was much the same when America’s former First Lady Michelle Obama, former model Cindy Crawford and Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman all hit their 50th birthday…
The shock was as if any one of them had announced that their NBF was a Martian!
Graham Norton’s reaction, though ridiculous and incomprehensible to the SoSensational team, is typical. Though, as a man who still looks ok over 50, he, of all people, really should be less astonished that, celebrities don’t turn into withered prunes moments after hitting 50…
However, his attitude neatly sums up the gender divide: men over 50 can go grey and be ‘distinguished’ while women over 50 who go grey look ‘faded;’ men over 50 can have a paunch and be described as ‘prosperous’ while a woman over 50 with a hint of excess tummy…well, where do we begin.
It seems to us that women over 50 are expected to fade away into invisibility. By the way, just to be clear, we are emphatically not saying ‘women over 50 should fade away into invisibility.’
We are saying: ‘Women over 50 are expected by much of society and the media to fade away into invisibility.’ So when they don’t fade away into invisibility; when they – when we – persist in looking fabulous over 50 and sensational over 60, it confuses the children…
Women over 50, or 60, or at any mature age can still shine. It just takes a bit more effort and know-how…
Do you think there’s surprise when women over 50 look good? Let’s get a conversation going here! We’d love to hear your thoughts…
