We assume that you lovely GLOWs (Glamorous Older Women, SoSensational’s name for its demographic) remember, as do Jan and Cyndy, minimalism.
Minimalism, of course, was a trend that began in architecture and home-interiors; it was, as the word suggests, about “less is more”.
About paring everything back to basics; to the simple and unadorned, primarily without colour; minimalism was why the fashion pack dressed entirely in black (and occasionally white in summer) for most of the 1980s and 1990s. The matte white surface, the unadorned black jacket were what we desired above all during that time.
And then – thank goodness – shortly after the start of the new millennium colour came back into our lives, both into our homes and into our wardrobe. And minimalism came to an end.
Today, we all love colour and texture – in our homes and, especially in our wardrobe. And in celebration of gorgeous colour, of print, of texture, of the eclecticism in contemporary fashion, John Lewis has launched Maximalism.
Maximalism is the beautiful and eclectic polar opposite of minimalism, and at SoSensational we couldn’t wait to embrace maximalism, to tell you about it and to show you our very favourite pieces.
What we should, perhaps, clarify immediately is that maximalism has nothing to do with maxis (well, it could include a maxi skirt or a maxi dress), but that certainly isn’t what it’s about.
The Maximalism edit, curated by John Lewis, celebrates the eccentric and the eclectic, embracing bold combinations of print and texture and heavily embellished accessories, encouraging its wearers to have fun.
For all of us who loved summer’s favourite striped top – the Breton, Maximalism has re-invented this classic striped jumper, allowing us to update it by layering it with faux fur for an instantly chic daytime look.
For a truly feminine take on the Maximalist trend embrace full midi-skirts in floral print and silk shirts in bold graphic prints. Whether we choose florals, leopard-prints or oversized checks, Maximalism is all about having fun with your clothes and enjoying yourself.
The Maximalism edit also features the silver shoe, declaring it the new season’s Statement Piece. To bring cropped denim, or any other jeans or trousers, bang up to date, pair them with silver boots, brogues or sandals.
Are you a Maximalist or a Minimalist?
